How to Repair a Popcorn Ceiling
As part of your home painting project, you may find that you have to repair or patch your popcorn ceilings in some spots. In fact, it is a better idea to do a small repair rather than try to take the whole thing down which is a big messy job. First, you need to be sure of the age of your home. In most older homes, asbestos was used in building materials including popcorn ceilings and in cases like this, you will want to bring in a professional to do the job safely.
Next, you will need to scrape off the old popcorn with a putty knife before adding the new compound, otherwise it won’t adhere to the ceiling properly. Depending on the size of the area you are repairing, you may want to hold a bucket underneath the area where you are working or, put a drop cloth down. Then, apply new popcorn ceiling mix which you can purchase at your local hardware store with a putty knife and allow it to dry.
