Should You Sand Before Painting Your Home?
A frequent question that gets asked by DIY homeowners contemplating painting project is whether or not sanding is required before they begin applying the paint. And, the answer is it always depends. As a rule of thumb, the more smooth the surface the more likely you will need to sand in order to get a nice finish. So, if you need to paint a popcorn ceiling, you will not want to sand before hand.
Now, if you have an interior painting project and you are going to paint a bedroom for example, you might notice on close examination that there are some little bumps on the walls every now and then from the previous paint job. This is just where the old paint when it was applied got a little dry while being applied and it created a kind of little bubble. This is what you will want to sand down before applying a fresh coat of paint. And, the other reason for sanding the walls before you start painting is to remove any little cobwebs that may be on the walls that you won’t necessarily see depending on the lighting of the room.
