If you are a do-it-yourselfer and do your own home renovations, please make sure that you are disposing of your materials in a responsible manner. When painting, never dispose of your leftover paint in the storm drain. Always take leftover paint to your community’s waste disposal unit. Or, if you have half a can or more of paint left, you can either bring it to your local Habitat for Humanity or run an ad on Kijiji if you have a full can left. Not only is dumping your leftover paint down the drain harmful for the environment, in most communities it’s illegal.
Orange, used creatively and carefully, is warming up home decor this fall
Orange is a great colour this time of year. The leaves are changing, pumpkins are appearing on doorsteps, you may even be inspired to paint a room orange. To be honest, this paint colour looks great if it blends with the rest of the décor of the room. Yesterday, I went to an open house and one of the rooms was painted bright orange. Every other item in the room from furniture to wall hangings was dark brown or black so everything blended really well.
Want a new look for your room? Try a mural
You may be considering painting an accent wall or focal wall in a room of your home, a trend that has become very popular the last few years but you may not have considered painting a mural. If you haven’t got any artistic skills don’t worry because you can purchase stencils that make the job much easier. This type of project is great for a child’s room but with a little searching on google you can find these paint by numbers type stencils that would be suitable for other rooms in your home.
Colour Choice for Interiors? Focus on Green
For those who are environmentally conscious and look for ways to conserve energy, this is an interesting article about how paint colour can affect the brightness of the lighting in a room and result in lower energy costs if you choose a light colour. Light, bright colours maximize and reflect the natural and artificial light in a room and therefore you’ll need lower wattage bulbs or in the case of daytime, no additional light at all.
From the Pros: How to paint interior walls
Interior painting can have a dramatic effect on home improvement. If you’re unsure of the colour you wish to use then a good idea is to obtain a small sample can of paint from the store and paint a small section of a wall to see how it looks. Before going gangbusters on the whole room, see what it looks like at different times of with natural light and artificial light. Then you should be able to get a good sense of what the finished room will look like.
